So the trendy brand Guess might go a bit over the top with studs, plastic embroidered plates and logos on their handbag designs, but what do you ladies think about Marciano handbags, the upscale brand owned by Guess Inc? I never really looked into Marciano’s accessory line, but upon viewing their Fall 09’ collection, some of their goods don’t look bad at all. I can’t say I’m in love with the Martha Cutout Tote, but from all, it has got to be my favorite.

I like how this bag has a rocker chic vibe to it; it’s great for the ladies who want to try the heavy rock gal look without breaking the bank much. A cool array of knotted leather adds character to what would have been another simple black bag, and I can’t possibly complain about the distressed look either.

Carry this tote with the studded cut out handles or by means of the chained leather wrapped shoulder straps, if the tote gets heavy for everyday wear, simply detach the chains for a much lighter feel. It’s a cute bag, extremely roomy, and a great tote to call your “kick-around”.

Women’s Wear Daily announced that Marchesa will be venturing into the accessories business, launching in spring 2010. Due to debut at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York on September 16, the collection will include handbags and clutches as timeless and elegant as their eveningwear. These bags can be used again and again, and no one will dare call you a bag-repeater. As Marchesa co-founder and designer Georgina Chapman said, “some people don’t always have an occasion for a gown….you could wear these with jeans and a T-shirt.” I’m sure this will attract more business for them and at the same time give us more handbags to love!

As more designers break into the realm of handbags, the real contenders stand apart from the wannabes. Donna Karan is a well known label, but not in the world of handbags. Not only are a new batch of Donna Karan bags popping up, but they are grabbing our attention. Looking young, and hip, some of her fall bags feature an array of zippers. Zippers are the new rage, which you will see more of on shoes, bags, and clothing.

I am excited about the Donna Karan Zipped Clutch which brings the perfect bit of punk and rock to a black clutch. Who really wants to carry a plain black clutch these days? Possibilities are endless and while everyone is doing the stud trend I am all for the zipper trend. Must have more zippers.

There have only been a handful of times we have reviewed Donna Karan on PurseBlog and many were, well, not positive. But after Amanda reviewed the Donna Karan Pleated Tote, I found a new love and appreciation of Donna Karan. Whoever is head of accessory design there, needs to stay put. The zipped clutch features all over silver tone zip embellishments on black leather along with visible stitching. The clutch calls to me. No need to be bland with black, be bold with black. New handbag designer love of the day goes to Donna Karan.

Marchesa to launch new bag line at Fashion Week

Marchesa has realized what most fashion watchers already know: handbags are one of the most profitable categories of products that a brand can make. They don’t take the sizing and fit of a dress, they’re seen as useful and more worthy of expenditure by consumers, and they can be sold in a larger variety of stores than a ball gown. They provide an introduction to the brand for new customers and increase awareness and familiarity among potential clients. Any high-end designer would be crazy not to make bags.

Georgina Chapman and the fine folks at Marchesa are decidedly non-crazy, so the bags are on their way and will debut for Spring 2010 at the forthcoming New York Fashion Week. Since their line is made up almost exclusively of ultra-detailed evening wear, it’s not surprising that they chose clutches and evening bags to make up their inaugural accessories collection. They show much of the detailing that has become Marchesa’s signature – intricate beading, rosettes, and a limited color palette. My favorite touch, though, is the jagged crystal wrapped in stone-encrusted metal that forms the closure on many of the bags. A little bit of a hard edge to set off an evening bag’s demure nature.

The designers insist that all of the bags were designed specifically to be large enough to fit a Blackberry, keys, and makeup for touch-ups. If that’s the case, then hallelujah, it’s a common concern that they’ve chosen to address. They will be made in silk, metal, and exotic leathers and will retail from $995-$5000. Since the collection has yet to be presented, store availability is unknown, but the designers say that they will be sold in the same types of stores that sell their dresses, both in the evening wear department and on the main floor with the rest of the accessories.
